Lyric Breakdown

This task was to highlight the timing between each line of the song so when we come to shoot our own video we have a guide to follow so that the lip sync is in time with the performance, also to create successful thought beats with the video. This task also links in with our initial ideas task, as we used the numbers for each line of the song to number our ideas.

Detailed Video Analysis

This music video for Rita Ora’s song ‘How we do’ has all the typical conventions of a pop genre video. It opens with a very muffled sound over the track, showing medium shots of people dancing in vibrant clothing, low key lighting is used to black out the background and concentrate on the foreground. I believe that this has been created to make the audience feel like they are walking into a party, the muffled sound effect creates how your ears adjust to the volume of music when you walk into a party to portray to the audience that they should feel like they are doing this when watching this music video. Pop music is all about popularity this music successfully portrays a pop genre as its narrative is based upon the ultimate party which are usually, especially in American terms hosted by a popular individual of group of people that hold a high amount of status. Bright colour, upbeat sound track and a catchy chorus lines are typical conventions that have been applied to make this music video as successful as it has been with in the pop genre.
The narrative to this video is all based upon what could be classed as the ultimate party through representation, the narrative is juxtaposed as it shows us the ‘party’ but the lyrics explain it from a morning after point of view explaining to the audience what has happened the night before creating a disjointed narrative. The video switches from the use of subtle shots, used for the verses of the song to more energetic shots used especially in the chorus to create energy and thought beats from ‘when the sun sets baby...’ and the performers jump in time of the music to create a party scenario, jump cuts are used throughout the video this implies how when you’re at a party you cannot be a part for all aspects that are involved within one party so the jump cuts give you a sense of what your either missing out on by showing it from more than one angel or point of view, This can also relate to the lines of the song that say ‘party and bull sh*t’ as I would relate this phrase to rumours, comments and remarks that are not always correct and can be accumulated at parties when others get carried away, it normally occurs when you are not a part of the convocation or the people surrounding you. So therefore the jump cuts from different aspects of the video play a large part on the narrative as it shows how in reality you can not be in more then one place at a part but through the disjunction of this video Rita Ora can. Also a party scene is a very stereotypical narrative and theme to a pop genre music video.
Pop genre is portrayed by representation through costumes of the performers, the use of bright vibrant clothing as well as short revealing outfits is what represents the pop genre as it is based upon popularity, popularity is not likely to be received if you don’t show off what you have and the enjoyment you get from things a social situations which is strongly represented from this genre and implied within this music video. Also representation of the disjointed narrative shows the pop music genre as it creates a more interpreted feeling towards the artist from the audience as it shows that they are challenging the genre more as David Buckingham theorised changing it over time, making it more of an abstract context then a literal. Pop genre represented through the use of camera shots as well variety of cuts and jumps are used to disjoint the sequence from been a solid of film to edit. Hand held cameras are used to create the essence that the audience is surrounded by the impact of the situation making it feel like a very realistic situation. This is also supported from high and low angles to represent the highs and lows of a party for instants in this video the highs is the part and the lows is the feeling from the morning after that is portrayed to the audience through the lyrics.

Real Treatment sheet - Tulissa live it up

I emailed a family member of mine who is a professional director asking for further information on the planning that goes into a music video's , He emailed back with a treatment sheet example for Tulisa video Live it up , from this we could look at how the ideas that where suggested in the treatment sheet where applied in the final music video. So that I am able to make the same kind of links recognizable when I start to create my own work. .

Digipak Analysis

I have used a power point presentation for this task so I was able to separate all the sections of the digipak on to its own slide so I can show my full understanding to the components of it in detail.

Magazine Advert Analysis

A large image of Gwen Stefani is used to dominate the majority of this advert, The image denotes her sat in a throne like chair holding a crown and a cane, portraying royalty and high class status. The scale of the image is to represent her personae as a strong female character. The image uses complementary colours and tones within it, A lot of yellow and golds are used to connote how royalty is portrayed in this image, showing wealth and a stronger upper class working category. The style of the image is very abstract and has the effect that it has been painted opposed to a straight photograph has been taken. The painted effect makes the image look out of focus , however Gwen Stefani's face is in a stronger focus then the rest of the image, to create the effect of a shallow focus. Her lips in the image are very detailed and highlighted with red lip stick this connotes that she is portrayed as a typical female with strong characteristics. A smaller image is positioned in the bottom left hand corner to show the overall look of the album so that it is not just the face of the artist that is trying to be sold within this advert it is the actual branded album product that is been sold as the intention of this advert.
The text that is used on this advert has a very bold and flamboyant, to emphasise on the class that this advert is trying to portray. Bold gold text ' Gwen Stefani' is positioned three quarters of the way down the page. This positioning has been carefully selected so that it does not take any focus away from her identity, but still informs the audience who the poster is advertising. Using the colour gold and making to font bold , again emphasises on the royal vibe that is been portrayed with in this advert and Gwen Stefani's personal style. Text in the same font and style is used in a smaller contexts underneath the bold heading to inform the audience and her new album. One of her song titles 'Rich girl' is positioned on the lower end of the advert, this is effective because natural our eyes look top to bottom , so because of this we can look at the advert from the top downwards and get a feel for what it is trying to portray and sell to us as an audience before we are even given a literal insight.
The image and the text have a strong relationship with each other as the image is portraying wealth, status class and royalty the text anchorage's this by complimenting the way it represented to create an effective composition to show royalty as an overall outcome. It creates a wealthy personae about this advertisement suggesting that her choice in pop music genre is focused around wealth and status as issues in her songs, this is emphasised my the song ' Rich Girl'.
The iconography of this artist represents her genre well as she is portraying an image of wealth and royalty of status, meaning she has had to work hard to get there to achieve her popularity of the pop genre. It also signifies to the target audience that hard work gets you where you want to be so she is portraying a good successful self image to her audience which makes her icon more popular in the media.

Opie self portrait

Rachel Harriman

This is a portrait picture of myself in the style of Julian Opie, who is a british artist famous for his work on blur greatest hits album cover. I used a program called photo booth to capture a photo of myself. I opened this image onto photo shop and cropped the original image down to a size that is appropriate to work with using the selection tool then image crop. Adding a new layer i the used the lasso tool to trace around the outline of my hair once i had done this i used the colour picker and selected a cool then used the fill tool to apply this colour. i repeat the same process several times to apply face, facial features, neck, arms and t-shirts. I selected certain layers and adjusted the stroke lines to enhance the shapes do it did not just like one block of colour it gave more detail to the shape of my body features. Lastly i applied i final layer behind all the other layers and used the fill tool to apply a background to finish of my own Julian Opie style of work.

Shot Count Activity

In this music video I counted approximately 95 shots at 1 minute 10 seconds. To work out the average amount of shots for the duration of the video I multiplied 95 by three giving it a total of approximately 285 camera shots for the video as a whole. The genre of this video is pop i believe that David Buckingham’s theory would be applied to this video, 'Genre is not simply "given" by the culture: rather, it is a constant process of negotiation and change.' This video is very abstract and almost random some may call it; it’s a collaboration of high energy, pop, dubsteb and slight rave characteristics to make it selective for the pop genre as it has become a 'popular' success. Close up shots are used, for example at the start of the video on her lips covered in glitter, this shot emphasises the madness that is in store for us as an audience as the over exaggerated mouth movement suggest high energy and the glittery on the lips opposed to 'stereotypical' red lips of a female shows that there is a twist to this video. Carol Vernallis verdict of diegesis is acted on in this video as the shots and the speed of the shots move to the beat of music, for example at the start the camera jump zooms out to reveal the artist face in time with the beat of the music to 'Bom, Bom, Bom'. The Diegesis is applied though the entire duration of the video which creates a high energy feel to the theme, all performers dance and move to the beat of the music to create an impact on the audience to expand on the high tempo and high energy performance. To expand on this high energy, jump cuts are used to jump from one shot to another in time with the beat of the music to create a sense of adrenaline to the audience as they just don’t know what is going to happen next. Cut zoom shots are used to focus in on a part of the song or to expand out on the focus of the song as a whole as there is a lot going on in the sense of mise-en-scene, cut zooms help the audience just to focus that bit more gives them something to watch constantly and the cuts act as a guide to the next part keeping the audience intrigued. Split screen shots are used create a focus on more than one aspect at once. Special effects are added with in some of the shots to emphasises on the lyrics of the song bold text is used for 'bom, bom, bom'  exaggerated on the extravagance of the style. This music video as a whole is all around style and finding which style is you and how everyone has a different style of their own "Me got life, me got style, me got nothing on my mind. But I'm so cool, and I'm so groovy, when I go bom bom bom!" these lyrics suggest that showing that style is a large part of society today "me got nothing on my mind" suggests that style is the only thing on her mind, as she has her style personified there is nothing else to be a care of hers. Around half way through the video the tune changes to have a majority of trumpet sounds with in it, the shots jump cut from one another at a high tempo with the trumpet in the shot to emphasise the effect that this instrument has. Graphic match is used to cut from one shot to another where we see the lead singers head inside of a circle surrounded by a black background, we later see the circle shot re-appear when one of the performers is holding a hand held camera the circle shot is shown in the lens, it then zooms into a larger shot, this is used to establish a strong continuity of action and linking the two shots metaphorically. The shots that i have mentioned are continuously repeated throughout this video making it a very successful video for its use of shots.

Skills Audit

This table shows the skills that I used and applied to my AS media work when producing a opening sequence to a film noir, and i have gone on to explain how i will continue to use these skills within my A2 project and how i will develop them further to make my project successful.
